Monitoring Rapid Urbanisation with Imaging Radars Case Study: West Africa
نویسنده
چکیده
Up to date urban mapping and population data are required by policy makers, economists and planners in the developing world, and particularly for cities in South Asia, Latin America and Africa, to enable informed decision making. For many of these regions (particularly in the tropics) the all-weather capability of spaceborne imaging radar could prove to be a reliable and systematic monitoring technique. The potential of repeat-pass ERS SAR data to synoptically monitor rapid urbanisation is demonstrated for Kumasi (Ghana) for the period December 1995 to February 1999. The results confirm the complexity of the relationship that exists between the radar cross section (RCS) and the built environment. As a result RCS are simulated using simple scattering models to study single bounce effects from roofs and double bounce effects from wall-ground structures. Initial results show that the RCS is strongly dependent on incidence angle for single-bounce scattering, and on look direction for double-bounce scattering suggesting that (i) ERS PRI data is most sensitive to roof structures, and (ii) Radarsat Fine Beam data is influenced more by wall-ground structures.

In this study, the dust situation in 6 synoptic stations of Kermanshah province was investigated in the period 1987-1992. To study this phenomenon, dust days were extracted in 2009 with code (06) from the current air index. Then data from different bar levels were taken from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Organization (NCEP / NCAR) database and maps were plotted in the Grads software. Fin...

This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...

Dextrocardia is a cardiac positional anomaly in which the heart is located in the right hemithorax with its base-to-apex axis directed to the right and caudad. Situs inversus is an autosomal recessive disorder that causes organs in the chest and abdomen to be positioned in a mirror image from their normal position. Dextrocardia may occur in isolation or as part of situs inversus. Similarly, sit...
